Heritage beyond tourism

Punto Wijayanto (Trisakti University) and Jean-Paul Corten (Cultural Heritage Agency) look at different ways a city’s heritage can be used to its advantage to avoid the pitfalls of tourism. Sawahlunto (Indonesia) was built as a facility for a mining company, now it is an attractive destination for tourists. In its struggle to find a balance between tourist developments and alternative developments, the city seems to be setting an example for the world.
