Historic Nijmegen and Urban Heritage Strategies

Heritage reflects an image of the city, reveals stories about its past and gives character and human scale to the city. If managed properly, heritage can effectively contribute to urban quality and serve as a vital asset for future development. This year’s course Urban Heritage Strategies (UHS) is tailored to the city of Nijmegen, one of the oldest cities in the Netherlands. Like other cities around the world, Nijmegen’s urban core faces the following challenges:

• Urban Densification, or how the city can accommodate an ever-growing number of people within its boundaries, while strengthening its historical character

• Adaptive Reuse, particularly concerning former industrial sites along the riverfront; sites that have played an important role in the city’s local economy
• Social Housing, or how to deal with a mass house legacy of a former generation that no longer meets current societal needs
• Climate Adaptation, particularly the impact of extreme rainfall and periods of drought in summers on neighbourhoods built on higher, sandy grounds.

These challenges are addressed at the international network event at the RCE on Wednesday 2 August.

Event programme

During this event you will interact with international professionals in workshop sessions on the above mentioned topics. The sessions contain lectures, debates and knowledge exchange. Furthermore, you will have the opportunity to play the serious game Water&Heritage. The event will be opened by a keynote speech from David Dodman, current director of the Institute for Housing and Urban Development Studies, and Coordinating Lead Author in the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC).

International knowledge exchange

The event is organized on the occasion of the summer course Urban Heritage Strategies, organized by the Cultural Heritage Agency (RCE) in close collaboration with the Section Heritage and Architecture (H&A) of Delft University of Technology and the Institute for Housing and Urban Development Studies (IHS) of the Erasmus University Rotterdam. During this course, which takes place from June through August, twenty professionals from partner countries as mentioned in the International Cultural Policy of the Dutch government, discuss the city of Nijmegen and the above mentioned challenges. They will share their experiences and perspectives on the subject with their Dutch colleagues. Likewise, the international guests are eager to learn about the Dutch situation.

This network event and the training Urban Heritage Strategies (UHS) are organized in the framework of the International Heritage Cooperation Programme of the RCE.
