Reuse

As the first edition of the book “Reuse, Redevelop and Design. How the Dutch Deal with Heritage” is sold out, the Cultural Heritage Agency of the Netherlands (RCE)  and publisher NAi-010 have published a reprint.

Indeed, there is still a growing foreign demand for this publication that tells about how the Netherlands deals with adaptive reuse. In the second edition, three recent projects are added: The former railway workshop in Tilburg, the former monastery complex Mariënhage in Eindhoven and the Amsterdam Burgerweeshuis. This also means that three previously recorded cases have lapsed: the former post distribution office in Rotterdam, Ypenburg airport and royal palace of Soestdijk.

The book accompanies the exhibition under the same name that has now already visited many countries. The aim of this Shared Cultural Heritage project is not to tell foreign countries what to do, but to start the debate on adaptive reuse, realizing that the Dutch approach approach is not timeless. When circumstances change this practice will consequently change. And then it is good to know how others deal with this. The current "intervention architecture", originating from Italian architects like Scarpa and Rossi, has become a fashionable phenomenon. And fashions tend to have a limited lifespan. The RCE always uses exhibition and book in combination with workshops and lectures  in collaboration with Dutch architects.
