Under the Volcano: future perspectives of Ternate's Historical Urban Landscape

This report is a compilation of the results of the Ternate Conservation and Development Workshop in which the participants studied the development potential of Kota Ternate, Indonesia.

Revitalization of the historical city centre

Kota Ternate is expanding at an uncontrolled rate. In order to meet the growing demand for building plots, land is being reclaimed along the vulnerable coastal strip and large sections of the slope of the volcano, a landmark, are being dug away. In addition, high-rises are increasingly affecting the island’s characteristic outline. In 2012, a workshop organized in the context of the two countries’ joined heritage policy addressed the revitalization of the historical city centre and the development potential of Kota Ternate. The workshop was organized in collaboration with Khairun University, the Ternate Heritage Society and the municipal Planning Board.
