Probolinggo mission - Preserved City in Development

Future opportunities for the Indonesian town of Probolinggo were mapped by means of a ‘quick scan’ and a number of workshops. The conclusions are presented in this report.

Dutch colonial period

Much of the development of Probolinggo occurred during the Dutch colonial period. After this small port town had been linked up to the Indonesian railway network, it expanded into an important hub. The Probolinggo municipal council is keen to engage in the town’s continuing development and expansion, plans which also need to incorporate existing cultural-historical heritage. This calls for a plan in which heritage serves as a starting point and a source of inspiration for urban development.
