Join us for this interactive programme and meet the international participants of Sharing Stories on Contested Histories (SSoCH). The programme in Leiden will conclude with a World Café, in which we will engage in dialogue about the dilemmas and difficult choices involved in working with colonial heritage.
About Sharing Stories on Contested Histories
SScOH is an international exchange and (un)learning programme, developed and organised by the Cultural Heritage Agency of the Netherlands (RCE) and the Reinwardt Academy.
The programme provides space for knowledge exchange and exploring innovative approaches to multifaceted research and storytelling. The programme's objective is to foster a sustainable network of heritage professionals with shared interests and ambitions.
Central questions explored in the programme
- How are museum professionals around the world dealing with colonial collections and their legacies?
- How can we critically engage with our own institutional histories and societal roles when facing these challenges?
- How can we handle collections formed and acquired during colonial times in an ethical and caring way? Can we, for example, reframe them through alternative methods of provenance research?
- How do we navigate and react to contestations over certain histories and heritage?
Addressing these often-contested histories is an important step in dealing with their legacies in the present. Museums and heritage organizations can play a significant role in these processes of change, reconciliation, and repair. SScOH contributes to preparing and connecting early-career professionals who want to engage meaningfully with these challenges.
The World Café in Leiden
This in-person World Café marks the closing of the SSoCH programme. Together, we will reflect on a selection of the challenges and cases discussed throughout the programme.
