Inside Installations. Theory and Practice in the Care of Complex Artworks

This publication, the offshoot of a research project by an international team of experts, addresses all aspects of the curation and preservation of installation art.

The history

In installation art, anything is possible. However, the short lifespan of the materials, techniques and media used in installation art may push its curators to the brink of despair. What were the artist’s intentions? What is the history of the installations? How can they be preserved and documented? This publication uses a wide range of cases to illustrate how museums are handling installation art, often in direct collaboration with the artist.
