The Cultural Heritage Agency of the Netherlands is currently involved in a project which conducted fieldwork on the nineteenth century Dutch cotton plantation Esthersrust.

Esthersrust

The nineteenth century Dutch cotton plantation Esthersrust is located& at the confluence of the Warappakreek and the Atlantic Ocean. It is an unique site as there are no other examples left of Surinamese cotton plantations. In 2020 and 2021, fieldwork was conducted by maritime archaeologist Santosh Singh with support of the RCE to determine the direct boundaries of Esthersrust and to identify artefacts. During the fieldwork a short documentary was made on the history and the archaeological value of Esthersrust. In 2024 The RCE joined up with (former) students from Anton de Kom University, Suriname. The aim was to monitor the site. Read more in this weblog.
