Archaeology is about traces and remains of human presence below the surface and underwater, starting at 300.000 years ago. These visible and invisible remains can tell us a lot about how humans used to live and work. The soil is therefore functioning as an archive, which we want to preserve.
Cultural Heritage Agency of the Netherlands
The Cultural Heritage Agency of the Netherlands concerns itself with policies on heritage maintenance, sustainable management, and improvement of accessibility to archaeological heritage.
The Cultural Heritage Agency appoints national archaeological monuments on behalf of the Minister of Education, Culture, and Science, issues permits, provides subsidies for maintenance, and manages the archaeological information system Archis. We also provide advice, conduct research, and share the knowledge we have acquired with others.
