In 2023, the Cultural Heritage Agency of the Netherlands (RCE) and the Reinwardt Academy will organize a diplomat edition of the training Sharing Stories on Contested Histories. This training is meant for cultural workers and other colleagues of Dutch Embassies, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the Ministry of Education, Culture and Science with an interest in worldwide societal developments and crises that are causing major changes in the the heritage and museum world.
From 16 February through 24 March 2023, participants will learn more about a wide field of museological and cultural developments that relate to global challenges. The Black Lives Matter and #MeToo movements, as well as the environmental crises and growing global inequality and injustice, shake the foundations of the museum. Colonial history and decoloniality seem more urgent and pressing than ever before, forcing museums to rethink their collections and their practices of exhibiting and public programming. In this context, the museum is reminded of its responsibility to contribute to social justice and equality in our communities. Central in all these developments is an urgent call to allow for more voices to be heard and to acknowledge the contested nature of heritage and museum collections and their display. We will discuss these developments based on a variety of cases from the Netherlands and elsewhere, allowing for the participants to relate the cases to their own practice and experiences.
More information about this training can be found on Call for Candidates - Sharing Stories on Contested Histories 2023 diplomat edition.
