Reconsideration procedures for denied restitution requests

Has the minister of Education Culture and Science denied your request for restitution of a work in the National Art Collection? You may file a request to have this decision reconsidered. Such a requestwill only be reconsidered if new facts have come to light.

In these cases, the minister will ask the Restitutions Committee whether the new facts give cause to reconsider the earlier decision.

If the applicant does not produce any new facts, the minister will not present the request to the Restitutions Committee.

Requests for reconsideration can be sent by letter to the Cultural Heritage Agency of the Netherlands. Address the letter to:

In your letter, in which you refer to the earlier advice and decision, you provide the following information:

  • particulars of the artwork (at least: title, artist and current location or inventory number, and preferably also a description)
  • name of the individual who was involuntarily dispossessed of the work during the Nazi regime
  • your relationship to this individual (familial and/or in the context of inheritance)
  • the new facts and an explanation thereof.

Research and factual report not possible

Since a recommendation has already been issued by the Restitutions Committee, it is not possible to submit an request for research and factual report.
